How do I find out if wolfdogs are legal where I live?

Call your counties Animal Control Office/Shelter. They should know. Remember, even if wolfdogs are legal in your state, the laws can be superseded by County or Municipal Governments.

What content wolfdog should I get?

If this is your first wolfdog, you should have experience with a northern breed dog prior to getting one, such as the Husky or Malamute. You should start with a low content wolfdog so that you can build a solid understanding of their mannerisms and behavior trends. A responsible breeder will know the characteristics of his/her animals. Most good rescue operations will also have evaluated the wolfdogs they bring in so that they can provide a “heads up” for the new adopter.

Should the wolfdog be my only pet?

Wolfdogs are pack animals, just like the wolf, and like most dogs, will be much happier and easier to control if you have another dog in the house, preferably of the opposite sex and similar in size. It’s most important if have a female wolfdog to have a male dog or wolfdog. Female wolfdogs are usually more high strung than male wolfodgs. Again, find out as much as you can about your incoming wolfdog, for many do not do well with cats or small dogs.

Should I tell people I have a wolfdog?

This is a sensitive subject. I advise only telling your close friends and those you trust. Never admit it to someone in authority from your local Animal Control Office. It’s also advisable to register your wolfdog with the vet as a “malamute/german shepherd cross” or something of that nature. Do not admit it a wolfdog to a person employed at your Veterinary office either.

My wolfdog breeder says its 87% wolf…. But it acts very much like a dog, could that be true?

Responsible breeders will know and tell you the correct content of their wolfdogs. Many irresponsible breeders like to advertise and sell their wolfdogs at being a much higher content than they are to justify the price they want for them as well as making the owner think the animal has a lot of wolf in it. If you ever have a question on the content, always take pictures of the animal and email them with your concerns to our organization or another reputable wolfdog organization for an opinion on true content.

But, what if the breeder has papers!?

Papers don’t mean anymore than if I typed up a statement, put a logo on it, and said your wolfdog was a camel. Papers can be fabricated by anyone for any animal. Some responsible breeders will have old documentation and pictures of the blood line of their animals, and this is good to see, even copy and keep…. But “papers”?....Don’t fall for it.
